I am your unrelenting standards schema. You can’t see me, but I have a strong influence on how you live your life. I am the part of you that is preoccupied with perfectionism, busyness, achievements, accomplishments and being time efficient. I like to think that I am very helpful for you and create motivation, energy and drive in you. Drive to succeed. Drive to accomplish things and get things done.
I can have quite a negative impact on you. I can contribute to you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious and depressed. I make it difficult for you to relax, slow down and enjoy life. I put you under a lot of pressure to get things done. I am demanding and put you under the pump. I often remind you that there is so much to do and so little time. I facilitate you living a goals-focused life. I don’t facilitate you living much of a values-focused life. I get you to prioritize results, outcomes and the destination. I don’t really allow you to enjoy or embrace the journey to get to the destination. With my influence, life for you is more about doing, not being. When I help you achieve a goal, I quickly help you by shifting your attention towards what needs to be done next. If you experience any delays or hurdles in reaching a goal, I increase the pressure to make sure you do what you need to do to achieve your goal. Some people think that the pressure I put on you is a bad thing, but I think it is a good thing.
